Bernie/Tulsi Win Popularity Survey at California Democratic Convention
June 2, 2019. San Francisco, CA. On the final day of the convention, after the end of the speeches of all the candidates who spoke, 200 single-question sheets were handed out and collected to learn which candidates were the most popular. Not all candidates spoke. That single question was a list with the names of all candidates and “undecided” on which they were asked to check one box. 14 candidates spoke.
Joe Biden skipped the Convention, using an LBGTQ dinner as an excuse. The convention did not occur during dinner time and there were two days of speeches. Mike Gravel, who has not made the debates was also not among those who spoke. All those who were surveyed were either delegates or guests as campaign volunteers were only allowed access to watch their own candidates’ speeches and not to the speeches of the other candidates.
Bernie Sanders came in first place with 107 votes (53.5%). He is extremely popular and spoke on the final day and so this was no surprise. Tulsi Gabbard came in second with 31% (62 votes). Third was not a candidate but undecided with 5.5% (11 votes). The third place candidate was Kamala Harris with 3.5% (7 votes). California is Kamala’s state and she was overwhelmingly endorsed when she ran for U.S. Senate. Joe Biden received 4 votes (2%), The fifth choice for candidate or candidates involved a three-way tie between Elizabeth Warren and Beto O’Rourke and surprisingly Mike Gravel with 2 votes each (1%). Mike Gravel did not speak. Pete Buttigieg, Cory Booker, and John Delaney each received 1 vote (.05%). The remaining candidates did not receive any votes.
What this shows is that, when people listen to most of the candidates, Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard are by far the most popular. It is also indicative of which candidates can most excite a crowd of registered Democrats.
